Oral medicine sits at the intersection of dentistry and medicine. Many conditions that affect the mouth (including persistent ulcers, burning sensations, unusual patches, chronic pain, and salivary disorders) are not straightforward dental problems. They require careful differential diagnosis, an understanding of systemic disease, and in many cases a coordinated approach with physicians and specialists. Our Oral Medicine & Oral Disease Centre is staffed by clinicians with postgraduate training in this specialist field.

What Does It Involve?
Oral medicine consultations involve a thorough history, clinical examination and, where indicated, investigations including biopsy, culture, blood tests, or imaging. We produce a differential diagnosis, explain the findings clearly, and develop a management plan that may include treatment within the centre, specialist referral, or shared care with your physician.
We see patients with conditions across a wide spectrum: aphthous stomatitis, oral lichen planus, erythema multiforme, burning mouth syndrome, salivary gland disorders, and oral manifestations of systemic disease including autoimmune conditions and haematological disorders. We also provide formal second opinions on oral lesions that have not been previously diagnosed.

Oral Ulcers
Diagnosis and management of aphthous ulcers, traumatic ulcers, viral lesions, and persistent or recurrent ulcers requiring investigation for underlying causes.
Burning Mouth Syndrome
Assessment and evidence-based management of burning mouth syndrome, including exclusion of local and systemic contributing factors.
Oral Infections
Diagnosis and management of viral, bacterial, and fungal oral infections, including recurrent herpes labialis, oral candidiasis, and acute bacterial infections.
Dry Mouth Disorders
Investigation and management of salivary gland dysfunction including drug-induced xerostomia, Sjogren's syndrome, and radiation-related salivary impairment.
Oral Lesions
Clinical assessment and investigation of white patches, red patches, mixed lesions, and oral mucosal changes to determine nature and malignant potential.
Oral Cancer Screening
Expert evaluation of lesions suspicious for oral cancer, including biopsy, referral to secondary care, and coordination of care through the cancer pathway.
Oral Disease Diagnosis
Differential diagnosis and management of complex oral mucosal conditions including lichen planus, pemphigus, mucous membrane pemphigoid, and related disorders.
Second Opinions
Independent expert review of complex oral diagnoses, unusual presentations, or cases where the patient or their clinician seeks an additional professional perspective.
